30A- Final Reflection

  1. After looking back on this class I wish I would not had missed a few assignments. I will finish the class with a B- which is not what I wanted out of this class. But I am happy with the amount of things I learned when it comes to entrepreneurship and have got a lot information about the opportunity that I want to pursue.
  2. What I will remember the most from this class is the videos we made preparing our pitches. I think they definitely will help and have an impact especially with talking to future customers and selling our product to them.
  3. Yes I believe that this class has a big impact on my entrepreneurial mindset. I hope that one day I will be able to make my opportunity happen. Yes I believe I have moved closer to an entrepreneur mindset.
  4. I would tell students to look at the assignments at the beginning of the week because some assignments have a lot to them such as the interviews. To do all the work as soon as you can and not wait to the last minute. To get that mindset I would recommend being a go getter. As long as you put work in for each assignment you will get a good grade.

29A- Venture Concept No.2

  • The Opportunity at hand would be the ever changing minds of everyday Americans and their views of the environment and how to help with saving it. As the concept of renewable energy continues to be pushed on the public their mindset will change and look at other options for energy such as solar panels. As of right now most people do not know how affordable it really is. By approaching more people and being able to explain to them the benefits too solar energy and the price of it more people should be willing too invest into it. Currently there is a federal grant which you can get if your house income is more than a 100,000 a year. This grant will save you 10,000 dollars. Thus making the demographic for this product middle to upper middle class families who own a home. But learning about information like the grant helps people who do not know but if they did would most likely transfer to solar panels. Currently people are paying for their energy to energy companies who use non renewable resources that hurt our environment. This is a huge opportunity for the solar energy if people start to catch on with the grant and realize how much money they can save and also what kind of impact they can have the environment then I believe people will switch over. It is just going to take time but hopefully will catch on soon.
  • The Innovation I will be selling solar panels based on the watts that they will provide to power their house. If I have to buy the solar panels to install on the customers house then I will charge a rate of $1.35 per watt for instillation. If the customer already has the solar panels bought and just need them installed then I will charge a $1 per watt for instillation. The average houses uses about 900 watts a month. These will be competitive prices. What will differ me from other companies with similar prices will be ethical workers with up front honesty and quality work.
  • The Venture concept will make people want to use my company to install their solar panels on their house because we will be a reputable company. Such as always being up front and honest with prices and making sure to do quality work that looks professional. People will also want to go with my company because I have the same beliefs in them that doing this job will help out our environment in the long run. Our motto will be saving you money and our environment one panel at a time. This will help separate me from my competition. To get my business going and staying up with the market will be making sure that the people who are involved with my company have the same mission and also same idea as my company. My company will have a facebook page and also be able to find us on google with contact information and reviews from our customers.
After reviewing the feedback that I received I decided to add more details to my venture concept and also give more examples of people who could get solar panels installed.

28A- Your Exit Strategy

  1. When it comes to my business and my exit strategy it all depends on the market. If the market crashes like it did in 08 people will not want to spend extra money on solar energy so I would sell in 5 years. But my ideal exit strategy would be to one day leave my business to my kids. I think that the economy is moving in the right direction and that there is an opportunity to make a lot of money. If I invest that money right then I believe that my exit strategy can come to life and I can hand the business down to my children one day.
  2. The reason why I chose this particular business strategy is because I think it would be awesome to teach my kids about a certain field or niche and have them become experts in it and continue to help the world by assisting people with renewable energy.
  3. Yes I believe it has influenced me. I believe that my personal beliefs made me lean to this exit strategy.

27A- Reading Reflection No.3

  • For my final reading I chose to read Inbound Marketing by Brian Halligan. The main theme for this book is how you as the business owner can expand your business. The main ways that he talked about doing this was through social media or online tools such as podcast, webpages, and social networks (Facebook twitter). Once you choose an online tool he explains how to make yours differentiate from others.
  • The way that this book connected with me and my learning for this class was by enhancing your online marketing. I know most business today have a facebook, webpage, etc. But what I really liked about the book was how he went into detail explaining how to differentiate yourself from other people online which is what I really want to do.
  • After reading this book I would have the class find a local business in town look at their social networks and suggest what they could do to improve them. For example take a local restaurant in town and maybe have them post each day a picture of the special for the night. Thus causing more marketing and having people comment on their post.
  • The biggest aha moment for me was learning that I could actually track how well my business is doing  compared to other business in the same field as me online. I thought that was pretty cool and great tool to have. I would highly recommend this book.

26A- Celebrating Failure

  • I failed in this class one time because I read the instructions wrong for an assignment. It was the pitch two video. Instead of applying the feedback from the first video, I thought we were supposed to make a video talking about what we can do better next time on our pitch based on the comments we received.
  • What I learned from this was to take my time and make sure to read the instructions clearly and if I have any questions about an assignment to ask them.
  • My personal belief on failure is that you must experience it to be successful. This class has just solidified my belief when it comes to failure. We as entrepreneurs will most likely experience some kind of failure. It just depends on how we react to failure. Yes I will continue to make risk just now I have more tools to make better judgements on the risk from this class.

25A- What's Next?

Existing Market- After conducting my interviews I was able to get some constructive criticism as far as my opportunity goes. The people had some good ideas for me as far as my business goes. One idea would be going with one brand of solar panels and maybe having them endorse me in a way or have them refer me when people call about buying solar panels. This will help me bring in more business and build good relations my community. One of the people I interviewed also stated that I would need understand more of the permits that have to be pulled to actually install the solar panel wiring. So I will have to get certified in that or anyone else I have working for me be certified in it.

New Market- After conducting my interviews some people who would be interested in my business once it got big enough would be potentially contracting with the University of Florida or Santa Fe. They both have solar energy on campus. These solar panels need maintenance from time to time and also they could want to expand and maybe use my business to do that.

I knew about UF and Santa Fe having solar panels I just did not know the course I would have to take to make it to where my business would be the one to work on them or install them.

24A- Venture Concept No.1

  • The Opportunity at hand would be the ever changing minds of everyday Americans and their views of the environment and how to help with saving it. My company will have a facebook page and also be able to find us on google with contact information and reviews from our customers.
My most important resource will be inside people who are already in the industry who I can turn too for advice and help me as I start my company. The next product that I would like to make would be selling solar panel phone charges such as ones you can use at the beach.  In five years I want to have a well established team that has great credibility when it comes to installing solar panels and getting our message out there too the public about solar energy. In ten years I would like to take a step back from the solar energy. Maybe have someone else run the day to day operations while I look for a new opportunity. This venture plan goes along with advice I have received from my peers.

22A- Elevator Pitch No.3

Sorry about the last video I thought we were supposed to talk about the comments that we received on our first elevator pitch.
Here is my 3rd and hopefully final elevator pitch on solar panels https://youtu.be/38ZJEaon6iQ

21A- Reading Reflection No.2

I choose to read The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki.

  • The main theme for the book was about feeding the "content monster". According to the book there are two ways of doing this. One by content creation and the other by content curation. Both of these play huge roles in feeding the content monster. In the art of social media you must feed the social media monster if you want to stay relevant or be successful. The book pretty much explains to the reader how to share content and what kind of content to share based on your consumer.
  • I liked the book I thought it is definitely something someone should learn about if they want to be successful in this new social media world. Everyone uses social media well at least the people that would be buying my product would definitely be using it.
  • The exercise I would have the class do after reading the book were to go online to one of their social media accounts and feed the content monster three different times and tell the class what they fed the content monster and why.
  • My aha moment would have been when the author was talking about sharing content that it must have a connection to whatever it is you are sharing because if you are just sharing stuff people will get bored with it and stop following you.

20A- Growing your social capital

Industry
  • I went to Lowes because they sell solar panels where I met a guy named Josh and we ended up talking a lot about solar panels and the industry and how far they have come in the last few years. Josh mainly focuses on selling solar panels there. He would be considered the expert at the store on solar panels.
  • They would be the domain expert because they know a lot about the product or service of solar panels.
  • I just went to Lowes and went to the solar panel section in the store saw him there and then started talking to him about solar panels such as different kinds and what not.
  • The favor they did for me was just explain more about the industry such as the best kinds of panels and where you really start to save money.
  • Hopefully by knowing him I now have a contact on where to buy solar panels in bulk.
Market
  • I met a guy named Andrew who works for Solar Investments Inc. He helps people compare prices between diy solar panel projects and paying someone to install everything. Works for a solar company in Australia.
  • The market expert because he is up to date with all market prices and how these prices make homeowners react tp buying solar.
  • I found a website of his and on the website he had his linkedin so I mesaged him on that and told him my story and asked a few questions pertaining to the assignment.
  • They clarified some grey areas I had about the market and hopefully one day do business with him everything works out.
  • Its one more person I can turn too for advice.
Supplier
  • I went online and contacted wholesale solar. I spoke to a lady name Cindy about the company and what sorts of discounts they may offer if buying in bulk or if they contractor discounts.
  • They would be the supplier part. Since they sale in wholesale.
  • I found their website online and found contact information on the website and just called the number.
  • She was able to give me pricing for some general solar panels based on the amount of kilowatt a house would usually use. The return would be me buying solar panels from their company to install.
  • I now have someone to call and order solar panels from for a reasonable price.
After working on this assignment I found it very useful because I focused on my opportunity and was able to get more information on the opportunity that I see. I plan now to reach out to more people and get more information hopefully.

19A- Idea Napkin No.2

    1. My name is Clayton Patton I am a junior here at the University of Florida working on my bachelors in Food and Resource Economics. I plan to graduate next spring. Some talents that I believe that I have include performing well under high amounts of pressure or stress. Some skills and experience that I have come from my time in the Army. An example of this would be when I built a runway in Latvia and we had no rock for compaction so we tore down and old building and used it instead. I pride myself on motivating all types of people to work and accomplish the task at hand. With this comes good communication skills which I also have. If I were to start this business then it would definitely take up most of my time and keep me from farthing my school. I hope it would grow and give me direction for my career.
    2. I am offering customers clean energy for their house that will one day pay itself off by installing solar panels to their house. The solar panels in a sense wouldn't be different from what else is out there. There aren't a lot of solar panel companies producing solar panels. It comes down to selling them at a reasonable price when compared to other companies price.
    3. The demographics that I plan to sell to is government buildings and upper to middle class families that can afford the solar panels. These people will want to buy because of the investment opportunity and wanting to help the environment. When it comes to the government  I mean getting the contract to supply the solar panels to government buildings or maintain the solar panels on government buildings. Solar panels require maintenance so if you get a contract with the government you know for the length of that contract you will be well off.
    4. The reason why they would care is because they care about the environment just like people pay extra for organic food people will pay extra for "organic" energy such as solar panels hopefully.
    5. Some core competencies that I will have will be professionalism that sets us apart such as always being on time for instillation, making sure that the area of installation is properly cleaned up and that the customer is always treated with respect.
After redoing my idea napkin I believe for the most part that these elements fit together. I hope that I was able to better explain it the second time around. If I had something out of place it would have been the government aspect of the idea napkin. I hope I better explained it this time.

Two main points that I took away from the comments that I read was more examples such as explaining the government contracts and me working under stressful situations. The other main point I took out of it was being more specific.

    18A- Create a Customer Avatar

Here is the avatar that I came up with for my customer. My customer is a middle aged man who enjoys playing golf on the weekends. They tend to drive an economically efficient car. Most likely white car. Some tv shows that they enjoy come on HGTV. Yes they have 1 to 2 children. No adopted children. They enjoy crime mystery books and as far as politicians go they go with whoever cares more about the environment. They are in their mid to upper 40's. They feel like they are still in their 30's. I feel like I have a common interest in same politicians that care for the environment. No I do not think  it is a coincidence. We both care about the environment so it makes sense.

    14A- Halfway Reflection

    1. The behaviors that I have used and developed to keep up with this course making sure to look at the assignments in advance because these assignments are more than what I thought they would be. Especially the ones that call for the interviews. Another behavior is making sure to get your reviews done early if you have plans for the weekend. This class is definitely time consuming.
    2. I felt like giving up when having to do the interviews and I could not find people to participate in them. What pulled me through was my desire to get a good grade in the class. I'm trying to improve my gpa so one day I can go for my masters. Yes I would say my tenacious attitude has been with me for awhile. The experiences that most contribute to this would be my military experience.
    3. Three tips would be work ahead as much as you can, make sure to set time aside for all the assignments, and finally make sure you use the right link when submitting the assignments.

    13A- Reading Reflection No.1

    1. What surprised me the most was how many times they had to try before succeeding at flying. What I most admired about them was there dedication and commitment to flying. What I least admired was that we never hear about the sister who helped contribute to helping them fly. Yes they encountered adversity and failure. When this did happen they just came together and pushed through and kept chugging along until they were finally able to make it work.
    2. Some competencies that I noticed the entrepreneurs uses were the mechanical skills and being able to make things work with little money and not having big funds from donors.
    3. A confusing part to me was why nobody wanted to invest in the wright brothers. After reading the book it seemed like why would you not invest in them. They were extremely smart and mechanical inclined.
    4. I would ask what made them want to invent that? Also how scared were they each time they flew a new device?
    5. I believe that they had a strong opinion on hard work and thought that they would not be where they were if it was not for all the hard work they put in. I would have to agree with their opinion. I also share it.

12A- Figuring Out Buyer Behavior N0.1

    1. After conducting the interviews for this assignment I was able to get lots of information and found out the that most of the consumers from the interview would go on google too find out more information about solar panels and compare pricing for them. Some search terms would be price for solar panels and investing in solar panels. Some sources of information they look for our other people that have had solar panels installed and what kind of affect it has had on their power bill.
    2. In my interviews I found out that lots of people did not know that you could get solar panels put on their houses and really had no clue what the cost were associated with them and what kind of money you could save in the long run with them.
    3. In terms of need awareness and information search I would describe this as a strong need for awareness and information search. Lots of people do not know much when it comes to solar panels. I was able to conclude this after conducting my interviews.

    10A- Elevator pitch

Here is my pitch for my opportunity hope you enjoy!
    https://youtu.be/SXAyaCfCdQE

    9A-Testing the Hypothesis

Who: After conducting my interviews I had quite a few people tell me that they are on board for the opportunity except for the financial cost. One in particular was a lower class worker who stated that they like the idea of solar panels on their house but are already struggling to make ends meet so they do not want to invest in solar energy.
What: During an interview I had a person explain to me that my idea/ opportunity was a good one just that it might be a little ahead of its time. Some people just would rather pay for cheaper energy and that is something that we have to accept until we can make solar panels more affordable.
Why: I personally believe that the need has changed some. Not all people that I interviewed cared about solar panels. Some people just do not think that we are eventually going to run out of fossil fuels one day so have no desire to invest in solar panels.
Inside the boundary: Government buildings, such as court houses schools etc. Also upper class people who can afford the solar panels.
What the need is: The need is reusable energy that one day can pay for itself.
Why the need exist: The need exist because some people do not like paying for an electric bill and want to be self sufficient and care about the environment.
Who is not: People who are not concerned about the environment and lower class individuals who can not afford the solar panels.
What the need is not: To completely get rid of other forms of energy and too separate financial classes.
Alternative explanations: Alternative energy forms are on the back of most everyday people, the price can be very scary when first looking at it.

    8A-Solving the Problem

As previously discussed in other blogs I strongly believe that there is an opportunity in the renewable energy sector. As stated before as technology continues to advance it makes the chances of being self sustainable in renewable energy very possible. The product I personally believe that shows an opportunity in the future is solar panels. The way I see us being able to solve this problem so we can take advantage of the opportunity is through federal grants. If we can convince the government, even state government to invest in solar panels then the company who installs those panels can take advantage of that opportunity. So the solution for this problem would too start a petition and end up getting it put on the state senate floor so it could be voted on. The petition would contain that all government buildings in the state of Florida be fixed with at least 4 solar panels. So at the bare minimum you at least get the opportunity to install on government buildings. The public will continue to come around when they see more solar panels.

6A- Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

    1. I had heard that President Trump had lowered the taxes on corporations in the US thus causing more business to happen.
    • I found this article on the internet to support that opportunity.https://www.trade.gov/investamerica/.
    • The reason why I believe that this opportunity exist is because tariffs are being placed on other countries and their goods. Thus meaning people will be buying less of foreign goods and buying more domestic products because of the price difference. So there is an opportunity to invest in domestic products. The most likely customers will be investors or new entrepreneurs that want to start their own company in the USA. I think this opportunity is relatively difficult because you don't truly know what exactly to invest in just that the USA is going to be a good place to invest in because of trade wars.
    • I pay lots of attention to politics so I believe I saw this opportunity and much of my generation does not listen to talk radio or read news so I notice things that others do not.
    1. Another economic trend opportunity would be in marketing of alcohol at SEC football stadiums.
    • I saw on Facebook today that they lifted the ban on sales of alcohol in SEC stadiums. https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/sec-lifts-ban-on-alcohol-sales-allows-schools-to-decide-on-selling-beer-and-wine-at-on-campus-venues/.
    • I believe this opportunity exist because who doesn't like to drink and watch football. If someone takes advantage of this there will be a lot of money too be made! Possible customers will be any adults at football games who are of drinking age. Now that it is legal I think this will be very easy for large beer companies to take advantage of this such as offering sponsorship or scholarships at there schools for rights to sell alcohol at the stadium.
    • I saw this opportunity because I am a huge football fan and am constantly reading articles about what is going on in college football.
    1. A regulatory change would be President Trump getting rid of excess regulations on energy sources in the USA.
    • I heard about this on talk radio.https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesellsmoor/2019/05/30/trump-administration-rebrands-carbon-dioxide-as-molecules-of-u-s-freedom/#43bc7cb83a24.
    • I believe this an opportunity because the first time ever the USA is an exporter of energy. We are now producing more energy than ever before. Now that these regulations have been lifted people can invest in American energy. I believe the most likely customers will be neighboring countries such as Canada and Mexico. I think this will be an easy opportunity for neighboring countries they will be able to buy energy from a neighbor such as Canada buying from the USA
    • This can be also tied into me listening to talk radio and thinking outside the box. Not every energy source has to be renewable there is money in other forms of energy.
    1. Another regulatory change that posses an opportunity would be Brexit which is England leaving the European Union. As they leave there will be opportunities to make new trade deals because of them separating from the EU.
    • On talk radio I heard about the constant struggle of England leaving the EU.https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-32810887.
    • The opportunity presented would be countries outside of the EU coming to England wanting to do business with them because of canceled deals with the EU. Some potential customers would be the USA and really any country that is not in the EU. This opportunity could be difficult because all neighboring countries will still be part of the EU.
    • This has been going on for over two years but the opportunity has just arisen because their prime minister has finally resigned leading too stuff actually getting done now.

    5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

    1. State attorney: No charges against UF's Perine

    4A- Forming An Opportunity Belief

    1. I see an opportunity arising in the near future with jobs in renewable resources. The unmet need would be cheap renewable resources. The people with this need would be people who want to leave a cleaner Earth for their children. Such as installing solar panels here in Florida. Solar panels have been around for awhile but as technology continues to get better the price of the solar panels will decrease thus opening up the market to middle class Americans. To take advantage of this opportunity trade schools can be opened up that focus in on installing and maintaining solar panels. I would say that this is a 100% it is just a matter of time until this comes along eventually we will run out of non renewable resources.
    2. The prototypical customer would be middle class Americans
    • Middle class American
Q: Do you have any solar panels at your house?
    A: No
Q: Why do you not have any solar panels?
A: The price for them is too expensive at the moment. The return on the investment does not pay off until at least 5 years after being installed.
Q: If the solar panels were cheaper would you get them installed?
A: Yes if they were a practical price I would get them installed.
Q: Do you see in the future a need for solar panels?
A: Yes in the future but most likely after my time.
Reflection: After this interview I learned that solar panels aren't on the top priority of everyday Americans. People do not want to get them until they have extra money. It wasn't very surprising to me I know the reason why most people use gas is because it is so much cheaper than solar energy.

    • College student
Q: Do you think our school should have solar panels installed?
A: Yes I think that would be a great idea to help the environment.
Q: Do you know how much they cost compared to using nonrenewable resources?
A: No I do not but we should still use them because they will help save the environment
Q: Do you know anyone that has solar panels installed at there house?
A: Yes my friends parents have some installed on their house.
Q: Do you know that solar panels are becoming cheaper as each year passes?
A: No I did not know that but that is cool so more people can afford them.
Q: Do you think every building in Florida should have solar panels on them?
A: Yes that would be great so we could help save the planet.
Reflection: The college student did not know much when it came to solar panels other than that they help save the planet and are non renewable resources. I wasn't very surprised I feel like most college students think we should all go green but really have no idea how much it actually cost to do so.

    • Solar panel installer
Q: Has business increased in the past few years?
A: Yes business has taken off I would say in the past 2 or 3 years. More people are getting them installed on houses because there are financing options now.
Q: Do you believe your business will continue to grow as time goes on?
A: Yes I would not be in the business if I did not think it would grow.
Q: How long do you think it will be before most middle class Americans have solar panels on their houses?
A: I would say if I had to guess in the next 20 years.
Q: Do you believe that the social view of solar panels has changed over the years?
A: Yes there has been a drastic change I would say in the last 10 years of the public view when it comes to getting solar panels installed.
Reflection: It was nice to talk to someone that knew about the solar panel industry. I was surprised on how much the installer knew and was able to share with me.

    • Summary: After my original opportunity I would say that 60% of my original opportunity was correct. I know people want to use solar panels the problem is that there is not a strong need for them because of the price and the access to other sources to provide energy that is cheaper. My new opportunity will be more accurate because I adjusted the time frame for when the solar powers will be demanded. I think entrepreneurs should adjust to the feedback they receive from customers at least 70% as they say its not what you like its the consumer.

    3A Your Entrepreneurship Story

    • When it comes to my entrepreneurship story it would have to be my dad who started his own business and it has grown drastically over the last few years. The business my dad started is Wildlife Transitions which is a taxidermy company which I help him with every now and then. My dad taught himself and has been perfecting the art over the years he has been doing it. To grow his business he madd his own website and also got merchandise such as t-shirts and hats to promote his business. I recently talked to him and he told me that he had to turn business away which he has never done and that next year he is going up on the price because of how much business he is getting in. That is my entrepreneurship story. Here is a link to the website if you have any taxidermy you want to get done https://wildlife-transitions-taxidermy.business.site.

    • The reason why I enrolled in this class is because I saw it as an opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship. Also it worked out perfect for my degree program this fulfills an elective. This is only class that teaches you how to be self made. I hope for this class to teach me if I did want to start my own company what is a way I could go about doing it.

Why the bug exist: Sometimes the facts do not fit your argument so they base them on emotion.

    • When you call someone and instead of calling you back they text you
Why the bug exist: The person called might be in a meeting or somewhere where they can not talk on the phone so text instead.

Reflection: When coming up with a list of things that bug me it seemed easy at first but as I kept going down the list it got harder I would say for me at about 12 I had to start thinking harder of things that bug me. One reason why I found this difficult was because of my outlook on situations. I do my best to only get bothered on things that I can control thus causing less things to bug me.
